Description
| High temporal resolution timeseries, containing lipid data and observation data for four Calanus species in Skjerstadfjord from June 2019 to December 2020. Aim Mapping the lipid content for sympatric Calanus species during the year. Calanus species C. hyperboreus, C. glacialis, C. finmarchicus, and C. helgolandicus Location Skjerstadfjord, Northern Norway Location depth 543 meters below surface (mbs) Sampling Copepodite samples collected using a HydroBios Multinet with a 200 µm mesh size (depth ranges 500-300-200-100-50-0 mbs). Nauplii samples collected using a WP2-net with a 50 µm mesh size (depth range 50-0 mbs). CTD (Salinity, Temperature, Depth) data collected with every multinet sample Data Species determination Genetic analysis (C. glacialis, C. finmarchicus, and C. helgolandicus) Morphology (C. hyperboreus) Genetic analysis (nauplii all species) Total lipid content and prosome length Lipid sack size and prosome length analysis from photographs Observations Food ingested, parasites, gonad maturation stag, sperm pouch. Details At each sampling event, one sample was collected from each depth range. From each sample, up to 20 live specimens of each stage were collected at random. The live specimens were photographed for measurements and observations. The specimens were then preserved in ethanol. Specimens that were not morphologically identified as Calanus hyperboreus (determined by prosome length) were genetically identified. Genetical species determination were only carried out for stages CF (adult females) and CM (adult males). Physical samples are stored at Nord university. Results from the dataset A running mean of total lipid per specimen, and temporal presence related to observation data and nauplii for each species in stage CF (adult female). The study based on this data provide strong evidence of C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis acting as capital breeders and C. finmarchicus acting as an income breeder. (2025-09-18) |
